Q. How do I start?
A. Just turn up in some loose clothing and take your shoes off.
Q. Do I need to book an appointment to join or can I just turn up at a lesson?
A. Just turn up. We like to keep it simple.
Q. Do I need to fill in a form?
A. Yes. Basic contact and health questions.
Q. How do I find out when the lessons start?
A. Look on the Clubs page and select the club you are interested in. The times will be there.
Q. Do I need to be fit?
A. No, but you should be in reasonable health. If you are not sure, ask your doctor.
Q. Do I need to buy a karate suit?
A. Not straight away. You need one to take a grading though.
Q. Does R.S.K.A. sell karate suits and equipment?
A. Yes, but you do not have to buy from us. It really is your choice.
Q. Do I need to pay in advance?
A. Pay each time you train if you want. Your choice.
Q. Do you offer any free trial lesson.
A. R.S.K.A. offers very competitive pricing and doesn't feel it is appropriate to do so.
Q. How do I get a black belt?
A. Train and progress through the gradings.
Q. How often are the gradings?
A. Every 3 months for junior grades. Every 6 months going for brown belt grades. 1 year going for black.
Q. How physical is the training?
A. Sparring is touch contact and you get to hit a pad a lot.
Q. Will I be sparring straight away?
A. No. Usually after you have been training for at least 3 months and have taken a grading.
Q. How hard is it to train in Karate?
A. You get out what you put in. We will start you off slowly, the rest is up to you.
Q. Can I train at any R.S.K.A. club?
A. Yes, but different fees may apply (dependant on lesson length and hall hire etc).
Q. Want is the minimum age?
A. Depends on the instructor. Usually 4+, but you need to consider their attention span.
Q. What is the maximum age?
A. There isn't one, but insurance cover is affected after 70 years of age.
Q. Do I need insurance?
A. Yes, but it comes with the Karate licence which you must have to train. Beginners need a licence after 3 lessons.
Q. Does R.S.K.A. do any self defence?
A. Yes. It is part of the grading requirement for the final 2 brown belt gradings and above.
Q. What if I don't like Karate?
A. Discuss your reasons with your instructor, but you can leave at anytime.

A. Yes. We have seen students return after 20 years absence.
